Andrew, Macmillan VolunteerPublished: 8 Feb 2021
My name is Andrew Harper and I am proud to be a MacMillan volunteer.
My story began almost five years ago when my partner became a Volunteer Buddy, which is when I also joined the London SE Action Team. I went along as she was unsure of how to get to the event. While I was there, I joined in too and have never looked back.
On that day, both our lives changed – we became friends with amazing people who dedicate their time and energy to support a cause that has affected them, both directly and indirectly.
I have known friends and family who have had cancer. But the big shock was losing my brother last year to pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, he never benefited from Macmillan's support – from diagnosis, his passing was only 24 days later. Within this period, we also lost his wife. She passed away from a respiratory attack having heard about Jim's terminal diagnosis.
I will never forget the support I received from our team and head management from Macmillan. I now attend most events whenever possible. I also have the honour of taking photos of the amazing people running or hiking to raise money for this amazing charity.
Thank you all for being there when we needed to get support in any form, and taking the time to listen and help ease the burden. I hope to see you all again very soon.
